David Heeney to speak on The Electricity Conservation Revolution in Ontario

David Heeney will be speaking at the Electricity Utilities Environmental Conference in Tucson Arizona on 23 January as part of the energy efficiency stream of the conference. Here is the abstract of his talk:

Ontario, Canada's largest province with a population of 12.5 million people, has embarked on an electricity conservation revolution. With a target to reduce total peak demand by 6300 MW by 2025, with a 1350 MW reduction by 2007, another 1350 MW reduction by 2010, and an additional 3600 MW by 2025, the provincial government expects local electricity distribution companies (LDCs) to be at the forefront of the delivery through conservation and demand management programs for their customers. This includes programs for distributed generation behind the meter. The province has committed to spend more than a billion and a half dollars by 2010 of ratepayer money on this effort. Of this total, $160M was committed from 2005 to 2007, and another $400M is being committed to local distribution companies between 2007 and 2010. Is the regulatory and institutional structure in place to meet these targets? What specific roles will LDCs and other market players play in this revolution? What are the drivers behind this revolution? What conservation and demand management initiatives are in place, and what is expected? Will the revolution succeed? These are the questions that will be answered in this presentation.
