IndEco provides assistance for the development of a pollution prevention program

Wednesday, 23 February 2011

IndEco conducted research and carried out program design to assist the Toronto Public Health (TPH) division of the City of Toronto in the development of a potential pollution prevention rewards and recognition program for small and medium sized businesses. The first portion of the work included a cross-jurisdictional analysis of 20 environmental recognition programs across Canada, the US and internationally. IndEco reviewed programs ranging from municipally run programs such as the City of Fredericton’s Green Shops Program to business sponsored programs run on a national level such as the Business Commitment to the Environment program in the United Kingdom. The research included internet as well as telephone interview components.

IndEco presented the findings of the research for various aspects of program design (e.g. eligibility, administrative requirements, evaluation methods of program application). Based on these findings, IndEco assessed how well the components would meet TPH design principles and resource requirements. To assist TPH in designing the program, IndEco created three sample program design frameworks: a low resource program framework, a medium resource program framework and a high resource program framework.

TPH intends to consider the results of IndEco’s work in any development of a potential pollution prevention recognition program for small and medium sized businesses to reduce their pollution.
