As thousands of environmentalists and government officials from around the world Tuesday were hammering out rules for a global treaty to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Washington came under more heavy fire for its perceived lack of contributions. Environmentalists were infuriated by U.S. comments at the U.N. Climate Change Conference stating that Washington would resist any binding commitments to curb global warming through industrial emissions caps, and accused Americans of trying to derail the conference. Bill Hare of Greenpeace International said the lack of U.S. commitment to mandatory greenhouse gas reductions was the single biggest complaint among conference delegates. U.S. President George W. Bush has called for domestic reductions of greenhouses gases of 18 percent by 2012 and has committed $5 billion annually on science and technology to combat global warming. Link
