Developing nations must feel the benefits of fighting global warming otherwise lasting success will be impossible, a senior US climate advisor said during a visit to Gabon's capital Monday. "If one only does things for other countries, nothing will last," said Jonathan Pershing, President Barack Obama's deputy special envoy for climate change. "There have to be benefits, advantages for each country," said Pershing in remarks in French. Pershing said all countries needed to start linking environment and development. "It's not possible to talk about climate change and say there is a difference between development and climate change," he said. The Congo Basin is seen as one of the front lines in the fight against global warming. The region's rich forest resources make it the planet's second most important "lung" after the Amazon, but logging and development pose a threat. Last December's Copenhagen Accord included the creation of a 30 billion dollar (24 billion euros) fund for developing countries to "green" their economies.
